The Killing Joke is Officially Rated R
It's been known for quite some time that DC Animation was given the green light for an R-rated adaptation of Alan Moore's legendary graphic novel, The Killing Joke. However, they also said that just because they could make it rated R, doesn't mean they would. Now, however, it's being reported by Entertainment Weekly that the animated film set to debut at SDCC this year has indeed achieved an R-rating.

The Killing Joke may very well be one of the most highly anticipated animated movies of the year. It's an adaptation of a book that's by far the most popular Batman comic of all time, and without a doubt one of the most popular graphic novels period. The fact that Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, and Tara Strong from the 90's Batman: The Animated Series are all returning to their roles for the film is enough to take it over the top.

However, in the sneak peak that was recently released, the creative team behind the adaptation revealed that they'll be adding quite a bit to the story in order to make the material long enough for an entire film. That's really the scary part about all of this - if Star Wars should have taught the entertainment industry anything, it's that revising legendary fan favorites is an extremely dangerous move.

In the end, it's not entirely shocking that the Killing Joke achieved an R-rating. It's the comic that had Barbara Gordon getting shot in the spine, stripped nude by the Joker, and then subsequently photographed to later show to her father in an attempt to drive him insane. It deals with some pretty tragic and mature themes, so the R-rating doesn't really come as a surprise.

It's yet to be seen if the adaptation can replicate the success of the Moore's genius book, but fans will know for sure when it hits San Diego Comic-Con this summer for its world premiere.
