Today is Alien Day, and in honor of that very special occasion, Neill Blomkamp released awesome concept art from his Alien 5 film. The status of the film is still unknown, but we hope it happens, if only so we get to see Newt as an adult (and a bad-ass):

Newt, the little girl survivor whom Ripley took under her wing, was a fan favorite character in Aliens. But then the writers unceremoniously killed her offscreen in the beginning of Alien 3 (along with fellow fan favorite Hicks), angering many fans. Now, it looks like Blomkamp's Alien 5 will effectively retcon the final two movies and bring back Newt as an adult woman. This isn't too much of a surprise, considering no one really cares about Alien 3 or Resurrection anyway, and even Fox's Alien Day is basically ignoring their existence by bringing Alien and Aliens to theaters without any mention of the latter two movies.

But the real question is, will this Alien movie ever happen? For now, it's been put on the backburner in favor of a continuation of the Prometheus series (that's pretty much just an Alien series now), starting with Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant. It's understandable that Scott would get precedence, considering his distinguished career and recent success with The Martian, but they're not mutually exclusive, and we hope we get to see Blomkamp's take on Alien, as well as the return of Ridley and Newt, at some point.

Today (April 26) was declared Alien Day by fans and the studio in honor of the aliens' planet: LV-426. Alien Day includes corporate promotions and showings of Alien and Aliens at Alamo Drafthouse theaters. For a full list of participating theaters, click here.
