Claudia Gray's 'Bloodline' Could Be Our First Insight into Star Wars: Episode 8
After the masses of reading material that hit shelves before and after The Force Awakens, we've hit something of a dry spell for Star Wars books over the last few months. But, that's all about to change in a big way next week with the release of Claudia Gray's Star Wars: Bloodline.

Bloodline will be Gray's second Star Wars novel, following on from Lost Stars, which was arguably the best novel in the latest wave of new canon publishing. The fact that this is Claudia Gray and that the book will be written from the perspective of Princess Leia in the New Republic (post Return of the Jedi) era should be reason enough to be excited, but there's another excuse for you to put this on your must-read list.

Despite the fact that Bloodline is set before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Gray's novel has actually had a great deal of input from Episode 8 director, Rian Johnson. Now, why would the man responsible for directing Star Wars: Episode 8 be providing input for a book set well before his own movie? In an article over on StarWars.com Jennifer Heddle, LucasFilm's Senior Editor for Fiction, wrote that "Some of the story ideas and elements in this novel came straight from Rian Johnson,", which would seem to suggest that characters and plot-lines could be shared between Gray's book and Johnson's 2017 movie.

A few clues as to what themes the two properties could share are potentially offered up elsewhere in Heddle's article. Heddle reveals that Bloodline will give hints towards the formative days of both the Resistance and the First Order, and therefore will really flesh out the political climate that led to the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We also know that there will be a number of original characters introduced throughout the novel, so there's a good chance some of these folks will impact or interact with some of the plot-lines of Episode 8.

But, away from the potential Episode 8 links, Heddle points out that there is one big reason you need to be picking up a copy of Bloodline next week. Despite the fact that this is a book about Leia, you will have noticed that Vader is feature prominently on the cover. That's because during Leia's adventures, a scandalous secret about the late Dark Lord is revealed to the Galaxy, creating shockwaves throughout.
