These Are Rian Johnson's Contributions to Star Wars: Bloodline
Are these the earliest connections between the Star Wars expanded universe and Episode VIII? It was previously reported that Episode VIII director Rian Johnson had directly contributed story ideas to Claudia Gray's latest Star Wars novel, and now, Lucasfilm story editor Pablo Hidalgo has revealed exactly what those contributions were:

The fact that the "napkin incident," a memorable moment in which (spoiler!) Leia receives word of an assassination attempt through writing on her napkin, came from Johnson is a fun fact, but more revealing might be the fact that he came up with the political strife within the New Republic. While we hope the Star Wars movies never go into the nitty-gritty of the politics in such a dry manner as the prequels, it would be fascinating to explore the new political atmosphere in Episode VIII. More than likely, it will become important in some way that the New Republic has become divided between Populists and Centrists, who are broadly in favor of small government and big government, respectively. (It could also draw many interesting parallels to our current political climate.)

Star Wars: Bloodline is now out in bookstores, and Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
