Star Wars: Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards Drops Out of Godzilla 2
Gareth Edwards has been very busy lately, but now he can cross one movie off of his list. The news broke today that the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director has dropped out of the Godzilla sequel, which is set for release in 2019.

Edwards, who broke out with the critically acclaimed and low-budget alien invasion drama Monsters, previously directed the first Godzilla movie in 2014, and was set to return along with screenwriter Max Borenstein for the as-yet-untitled sequel. But now, he has left the project, and Warner Bros. is already on the hunt for another filmmaker.

According to a report from THR, his reasons for leaving are unclear, with some sources saying he wanted to take a break from big-budget blockbusters, and others saying that Warner Bros. was putting him under undue pressure to adhere to a timeline. Considering that the film was just pushed off an entire year this week, it seems that the studio was willing to accommodate him to some extent, so maybe it's a little bit of both.

Edwards' next film, Rogue One, comes out on December 16, while Godzilla 2 opens in theaters on March 22, 2019.
