John Boyega Explains Finn's Potential Romances in Star Wars: Episode VIII
If Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams were expecting a clear-cut response from fans on the potential romances emerging from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they were probably a little disappointed and/or surprised. Sure, it was clear that Disney wanted us to believe that love was possibly in the air for the newest heroes in the Star Wars universe, Finn and Rey, but the Internet took things a different way.

The bromance vibe between John Boyega's Finn and Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron was strong in The Force Awakens, so strong that many fans read into the situation a little deeper. A quick dive into various Internet communities will tell you that the movement to see Finn and Poe in a romantic relationship is a passionate one, and it's certainly a lot more passionate than the similar movement petitioning to see Rey and Finn coupled up. Perhaps the man at the center of this outpouring of love could shed some light on the situation?

John Boyega has been at the Cannes film festival over the last few days, and during a conversation with Variety, he took the time to tease what Star Wars: Episode VIII could have in store for his character. When asked about the budding romance between Finn an Rey, Boyega was quick to point out that there wasn't actually any romance between the two heroes.

Opening quote
"I mean, we didn't establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Daisy and I, we're friends."
Closing quote

This might come as more of a shock to some as it does to others, which is probably why Variety felt the need to get Boyega to clarify the situation. Here's what Boyega said when he was asked to confirm that there's no romance between Finn and Rey.

Opening quote
Yes, Finn and Rey – they're just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn't really know what's going on. So the romance thing is something that's going to be interesting in the next installment. It's not going to go the way you think it's going to go.
Closing quote

That's a smart answer from Boyega. "It's not going to go the way you think it's going to go," obviously means something different to a lot of people, but it would seem to suggest that a romance between Finn and Rey is not on the cards.

Of course, we're only one third of the way through this latest Star Wars trilogy, which means we as fans have not necessarily seen all the cards in LucasFilm's deck. Could it be that Finn will have a romantic storyline with a character who is yet to make an appearance, or is there something we're all overlooking? Certainly, seeing Finn learn the ways of romance after a lifetime in military service with The First Order is going to have a lot of comedic potential.
