Kevin Feige Explains Jane Foster's Absence in Thor: Ragnarok
The news recently broke that Natalie Portman wouldn't return as Jane Foster for Thor: Ragnarok, which led many to assume that she was out of the franchise altogether. According to Kevin Feige, there may also be an organic reason that Portman didn't need to return for the film, although there's still a possibility that Jane Foster is gone for good.

While speaking to the Empire podcast (via Slashfilm), Feige said that there were "many reasons" Portman wasn't returning, "many of which are in the film so you will see that. There are only a couple of scenes on Earth in this movie; 80 to 90 percent takes place in the cosmos."

It seems like he's implying that Jane isn't in the movie because the plot simply didn't call for her, although I don't really buy it. Love interests are already so tangential to the plots of these movies, it would make perfect sense for Jane to only appear for one or two scenes that take place on Earth. If Jane were still going to be the love of Thor's life, you would think that she would appear in any scene that took place on this planet (group movie contrivances aside).

Plus, it's a badly kept secret that Natalie Portman wasn't thrilled to play Jane Foster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it's difficult to blame her. Jane wasn't an objectionable presence, but she certainly wasn't a memorable one, and Portman wasn't given anything meaty to work with. I won't miss Jane as a character based on what she's done so far, but since Portman is such a talented actor and there's such a dearth of female scientists in movies, I wish that they would just give her better material rather than dropping her altogether.

However, it seems more likely that we won't be seeing Jane again. Not only have there been rumors that Portman wants out of her Marvel contract, but Tessa Thompson's new role in Ragnarok has been described as a new love interest and possibly a superhero of some kind, which would make her much more relevant to the proceedings than Jane ever was. Hopefully this means that love interests will have a better time of it going forward, but it's unfortunate that Jane Foster seems to be a casualty.
