Batman: The Killing Joke Official Description: "Witness the Birth of a Supervillain"
A proper animated adaptation of Alan Moore's infamous Joker origin story, The Killing Joke, is coming this summer, and an official summary has just dropped on iTunes. And from the looks of it, the movie will be just as faithful as we hoped it would be, right down to that "punch line that will leave you speechless."

Opening quote
What does it take for a person to snap? How much despair for a mind to fracture? These are the twisted questions that The Joker has set out to answer, to show Gotham that even an ordinary man like Commissioner Gordon is only one bad day away from sheer insanity. Based on the acclaimed DC Comics graphic novel, witness a journey into the dark psyche of the Clown Prince of Crime. Follow his humble beginnings as a struggling comic to his fateful encounter with the Dark Knight that changed everything. Fueled by the return of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker, witness the birth of a super villain, the fortitude of a hero and the punch line that will leave you speechless.
Closing quote

Possible spoilers ahead! (Click to reveal)

As fans of the graphic novel know, that "punch line" refers to the graphic novel's iconic, ambiguous ending, in which Joker finally tells Batman the punch line of the "killing joke," and makes the Caped Crusader laugh. Then, Batman grabs the Joker and the story ends abruptly, with the reader never knowing the Joker's ultimate fate.

Considering how much reverence everyone involved has treated the graphic novel, it's probably safe to say that the film will follow the same trajectory. However, there will be some significant changes in order to make the film feature-length, including a Barbara-centric prologue to make her plotline a little less controversial and a little more feminist.

Batman: The Killing Joke stars Mark Hamill as Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Tara Strong as Batgirl, and Ray Wise as Commissioner Gordon. The film will debut at San Diego Comic Con, and will be released on Blu-ray and Digital HD on August 2.
