Independence Day: Resurgence is now just over a month away from release, and today Fox has ramped up its marketing of the Roland Emmerich sequel with an epic extended trailer that is almost five minutes long and introduces a whole load of new content.

The premise for the sequel to the 1996 hit is a relatively simple one: After twenty years, the aliens are back to avenge their defeat at the hands of humanity. However, this trailer gives us a little more insight into just how these events come about, featuring some new shots of the alien weaponry and what appears to be a hint at an alien queen.

As we've learnt from the information revealed by the viral marketing campaign, Emmerich is attempting to build out a bit more of the backstory behind the aliens and what exactly it is they are capable of.  We now know that humanity has developed a serum to counteract the alien's telepathic powers, but in this new trailer we see Bill Pullman's President Whitmore using that telepathy to learn more about the alien's motives. The tease of 'She Has Arrived' would seem to suggest that the Queen of the alien hive has come to seek revenge for the events of twenty years ago, and judging by all the destruction that follows, it looks like she's doing rather a good job of it.

Various featurettes and hidden snippets of info are giving Independence Day more of a franchise feel, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Fox potentially green lighting more ID movies should Resurgence prove as much of a hit as its predecessor.

Here's the full synopsis for the movie.
