DC’s Shazam is Waiting on a Revised Script and Will Be “Grounded” But “Fun”
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was scooped up early on by DC to play Shazam's most infamous nemesis, Black Adam, early on in the days of the DCEU. Ever since, the idea that Billy Batson would be getting his own movie has been a source of excitement for fans of DC's Captain Marvel (or Shazam) comics. However, very little about the project has actually been known except for Johnson's casting, that is until now.

Recently, Hiram Garcia, one of Shazam's producers, talked with ComicBook.com about the project, and what he had to say is definitely exciting:

Opening quote
"[the movie] can be grounded and have real stakes but can still be fun. That's the place we always want it to come from...

...we have a character in Shazam that is a boy who is in this man's body who is having the ultimate fulfillment that I think all comic book fans and everyone can associate with. Like, what if you wake up one day and you can just do all this great stuff? And then on the other side, you have this force of nature who is really anchored by what he lost in his family and that thread that he's bringing with him throughout this journey...That combination of youth and enthusiasm and being in new to a world and then the place that Adam's coming from. It makes for a great dynamic that not only allows us to have not only real stakes, real story, and real emotion, but a ton of fun in the process
Closing quote

What Garcia describes seems to be in keeping with the new direction of the DCEU, as they seem to be aiming to keep a higher level of realism while also integrating the hope and optimism that one of the new decision makers of the DCEU, Geoff Johns, has promised to bring back in future films after the criticism Snyder's latest movies received for their grim and bleak nature.

Shazam will no doubt be a unique addition to the DCEU, and with Geoff Johns playing such a large role in the decision making for these movies, it's likely that the film will take a lot of inspiration from Billy Batson's arc in the Justice League title. It'll be fun to see what is essentially an 11 year old boy saving the day with the Justice League on the big screen, as Shazam bring's the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury to the big screen.

Garcia also mentioned that they're currently waiting on a revised script, but that he has a tremendous amount of faith in the project, going as far as to say that it will be a "Moses" project - one that rises to the top as the seas part.

Hopefully Shazam is everything Garcia says it is, as a lot of faithful fans have been waiting an awful long time to see the hero on the big screen. While it's currently believed that Shazam will debut in 2019, there has been talk of it possibly coming to theaters earlier. Fans will just have to stay tuned to find out for sure.
