Warner Bros' Suicide Squad movie isn't even out yet, but we've already had reports that the studio is planning a spin-off movie for one of the squad's most famous characters, Harley Quinn. Add to that the fact that a Suicide Squad sequel is already in the works and it would seem that WB are feeling fairly bullish about the franchise's prospects.

With so many pieces to the Suicide Squad puzzle, it might be hard to do justice to all the characters, many of which are icons for DC Comics fans. Will Smith's Deadshot and Jared Leto's Joker are just two of the many big names set to appear in the movie, and when you look down the entire cast list you realize the sky really is the limit for the squad's potential. Now, a new rumor suggests that this potential has been far from lost on the studio who are busy planning out a whole slate of Suicide Squad sequels and spin-offs.

According to We Got This Covered, sources close to the studio have suggested that they are planning on throwing a lot of weight behind the Suicide Squad property in the coming years.

Opening quote
"They're going to do a sequel for sure, and the recently announced spinoff with Margot Robbie has got everyone excited, too, but their plans don't end there. The studio is feeling very confident in the property. They think it's going to be a really big hit and they think audiences are going to fall in love with these characters.
I've heard more than a few talks of giving some of the other Task Force X members their own spinoffs, and like the Harley Quinn one, these films would open the door for a ton of new DC characters to show up.
The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I've been told. They're also really hot on Jai Courtney's character Boomerang right now. Nothing's set in stone yet, but you're definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come."
Closing quote

It's no surprise to hear that Jared Leto's Joker is being touted for his own movie, after all, both the actor and the character have huge box office potential. But, hearing that Boomerang is one of the characters being thrown around for a potential spin-off is slightly surprising. It's one thing for a character to work well as part of a collective, but it's a completely different thing for them to be able to hold their own in a solo outing, and I'm not entirely sure Boomerang quite has enough about him to warrant his own feature. That being said, we're yet to see Suicide Squad in theaters, so it could be that Jai Courtney and David Ayer have cooked up something better than the source material would suggest.

The fact that we're yet to see Suicide Squad is obviously the most important element here. Warner Bros. is, of course, counting on the property to be a huge hit with fans, but should it fall flat, its franchise potential will be lowered massively. The good news is, we've only got a few months left to find out, because Suicide Squad is released in theaters on August 22nd.
