John Boyega to Star in Pacific Rim 2
As if we needed another reason to be excited about Pacific Rim 2, everyone's favorite reformed Stormtrooper has been cast as the lead in the upcoming sequel.

Boyega will reportedly play the son of Idris Elba's character in the original film, although no other plot details have been released yet. Pacific Rim 2 will be produced by Legendary, with Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro serving as executive producer.

"It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today's generation of young leading men," Legendary's Mary Parent told Deadline.

Opening quote
"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox," said del Toro. "The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world' was our goal and I couldn't think of a better man for the job."

This is fantastic news, if only because Boyega is an immensely talented actor (with plenty of nerd cred!), but also assures us that the Pacific Rim sequel is actually happening. The film has been touch-and-go ever since the first movie came out and became a sleeper hit with cult audiences, but now seems to be moving forward, with Daredevil's Steven S. DeKnight serving as director and Jurassic World's Derek Connolly penning a new version of the script.

Ever since The Force Awakens, Boyega has been filling his slate with nerdy movies. In addition to the Star Wars sequels, he will also star in the dystopian Dave Eggers adaptation The Circle alongside Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, as well as voicing a character in the animated BBC miniseries Watership Down alongside James McAvoy and Ben Kingsley.
