Check Out Deadpool's Awesome Special Effects in This New VFX Reel
Deadpool was a relatively small-budget movie compared to Avengers or the group X-Men movies, so it's easy to forget about the masterful special effects work that went on behind the scenes. Now, a new VFX reel from special effects company Rodeo shows us exactly how the team behind Deadpool created fights in burning buildings, back spikes, and Deadpool's exfoliation issues:

The reel serves to both remind us how many practical effects there were, and show us a few unexpected shots that were shot entirely in front of a green screen. (Unfortunately, it doesn't show our favorite special effect—the fetal arm—but it's still pretty cool.) According to Rodeo, they were tasked with 100 VFX shots when the project first started, but that increased to 215 by the time the film was finished.

Opening quote
"Everyone at Rodeo FX was very excited to work on this movie," the head of the VFX team, Wayne Brinton, said on Rodeo's website. "Deadpool has amazing action sequences and still makes fun of the idea of superheroes."

As we've seen, it was essential that everyone working on the film had a genuine love for the character, and that extended to the VFX team:

Opening quote
"Wayne knows this story inside and out and was able to propose ideas from the comics, which Jonathan took to the director," said Jordan Soles, executive VFX producer at Rodeo FX. "Wayne's insight into the canon and his enthusiasm were a huge asset for the team."

From the video, it seems that the fire surrounding Deadpool and Ajax during their fight scene probably took the most CGI, but the most important effect was arguably Ryan Reynolds' skin, since that was the plot device that drove the whole film.

Opening quote
"This was my favorite sequence to work on and the most satisfying," said Brinton. "I knew we'd nailed it when the people around me in the theater gasped in disgust when they saw Deadpool's skin mutation."

Deadpool is now out on Blu-ray and DVD.
