Clark Gregg Teases S.H.I.E.L.D.'s New Director on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Now the dust has settled from the dramatic events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s third season, we've got time to reflect on what might be in store for the team this fall. Though the show dealt with some of the fallout from Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, the Sokovia Accords are likely to have a wider-reaching impact on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its characters.

During the show's latest season finale, we discover that Coulson, in the wake of the Accords and Hive's shenanigans, has been demoted from his role as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. . Who it is that has replaced Coulson looks set to be one of the big mysteries for fans to fathom out over the summer, and in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clark Gregg revealed that even he's not sure who has replaced his character at the pinnacle of Marvel's most important organization. But, just because he doesn't know who the new director is, that doesn't mean he can't join in on the speculation.

Opening quote
"I don't know that it's been determined [S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new director]," said Gregg. "I thought I was going to find out when I saw Civil War, but it's not at all clear. It all depends when the glorious Nick Fury [Samuel L. Jackson] returns from the cold and the shadows. I suspect, in the wake of the Sokovia Accords and the end of Civil War, the people involved in choosing who the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be are other than in-house S.H.I.E.L.D. people. If I know my government bureaucracies, I have a feeling it will be someone somewhat less qualified than Coulson to run S.H.I.E.L.D."
Closing quote

Should Gregg's comments of someone less qualified taking over S.H.I.E.L.D. be accurate, it's likely that we'll see a government lackey in charge, but if they aren't accurate, there's a whole host of potential options. The likes of Maria Hill and Agent May are two perfect options for the role of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s director, while Mack has also been making his own charge up the corporate ladder.
