Check Out the Creepy First Trailer for Netflix's Sci-Fi Mystery Series "Stranger Things"
This summer, Netflix is delving into Spielbergian territory with Stranger Things, an eerie supernatural/sci-fi show set in 1980's Montauk. Check out the suitably creepy first trailer below:

The action of Stranger Things is set off by the disappearance of a young boy in small-town Montauk. When his mother (Winona Ryder) investigates his apparent abduction, she uncovers both top-secret government experiments and malevolent supernatural forces.

The show was originally called Montauk, so the government conspiracy element is likely based on the Montauk Project, a series of alleged US government experiments that were focused on developing psychological warfare experiments, as well as research on sci-fi concepts like time travel, mind control, and contact with alien life, all culminating in a "hole ripped in spacetime" in 1983, which is around the time the show takes place.

The first trailer looks pretty suspenseful and atmospheric, although it remains to be seen whether it captures the 80's Spielberg classics it's so clearly aspiring to. Some of the dialogue is a little overwrought, but Netflix has been on a little bit of a roll lately, so we'll definitely give this one a shot.

Opening quote
Set in Hawkins Indiana in the 1980's, Stranger Things chronicles the search for a young boy who vanishes into thin air under highly suspicious circumstances. His mother (Winona Ryder) opens an investigation into the boy's disappearance with local authorities that unravels a series of mysteries involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl. A love letter to the ubiquitous cult classics of the 80's, Stranger Things is also a coming of age story for the boy's three closest friends that draws them into a world where mysteries lurk beneath the surface.

Stranger Things will start streaming on Netflix on July 15.
