Is This How Alien: Covenant Leads Into Alien?
Aside from some sparse plot details and a cryptic set image, most of Alien: Covenant remains a mystery, including its purported direct link to the Alien franchise. According to a new (unconfirmed) report, the connection is very direct, and has to do with Katherine Waterston's somewhat mysterious astronaut character, Daniels.

Possible spoilers ahead! (Click to reveal)

According to The Playlist, "sources close to the film" have revealed that Daniels is actually Ripley's mother, which would be a little on-the-nose, but also pretty awesome.

Opening quote
Sources close to film and actress tell the Playlist that Waterston will be playing Ellen Ripley's mother in "Alien: Covenant," which is an amazing twist and true to Scott's promise that the post-"Prometheus" prequels will eventually lead right up to the first 'Alien' movie.
Closing quote

It would be interesting if this were true, especially because then the audience would know that Daniels will stay alive in the franchise, at least until she has her baby. I would say that it seems unlikely that Ridley Scott would employ such an obvious tactic to link the two franchises, but after Prometheus strayed too far from the original mythology and was a disaster, Fox might want to name-drop a lot harder this time around.

This report hasn't been confirmed by Fox or corroborated by any other sources, so take it with a grain of salt, but it's certainly intriguing. I'm sure there will be a direct connection to Ripley at some point, so that it's not just the Xenomorphs carrying us through, but it remains to be seen whether this will be it.

Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on August 4, 2017.
