Is J.K. Simmons Beefing Up for Justice League?
The internet seems to be going crazy over this image of J.K. Simmons pumping iron, which some have speculated might be to prepare for his role as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League.

J.K. is certainly looking pretty jacked, but there's actually no indication as of yet that the reason for his transformation is Justice League. In fact, his personal fitness trainer recently had this to say about J.K.'s new look:

Opening quote
If he's preparing for Justice League, I don't know about it. This was just a personal goal of his he was trying to achieve.
Closing quote

Though it doesn't seem that Justice League is the purpose for Simmons beefing up, it's certainly understandable why some would think that. Zack Snyder is notorious about getting his actors to hit the gym in a big way, and they usually come out at the end of the day looking over-the-top jacked (remember Cavill and Affleck?), much like Simmons does now.

Some have argued that there's no need for Commissioner Gordon to be so beefy, but they probably don't remember Batman: Year One. In the popular Frank Miller story of the Caped Crusader's first year in Gotham, Gordon is presented as an ex-Marine with some really spectacular physical fighting skills. Don't believe me? Here's a scene from the animated adaptation to prove it:

Likewise, in Snyder and Capullo's final New 52 Batman arc, Commissioner Gordon jacks up in order to become the new GCPD official Batman following Bruce Wayne's death. So it certainly can't be argued that a physically imposing Jim Gordon can't be found in the source material.

Whether Simmons was beefing up for Justice League or not is probably of no consequence; it's near perfect casting for the character either way.

Fans can see Simmons in the role of Jim Gordon when Justice League premieres next year on November 17th.
