Sci-Fi Indie from "The One I Love" Director to Debut on Netflix
In 2014, surrealist indie The One I Love took everyone by surprise and became one of the best sci-fi movies of the year. Now, the writer/director behind that film is taking on another quirky romantic sci-fi premise in The Discovery, which, in an unusual move, will premiere on Netflix before coming out in theaters.

The Discovery takes place in a future in which the afterlife has been scientifically proven, and people start committing suicide left and right in order to reach it. Jason Segel plays the son of the scientist who made the discovery, played by Robert Redford, while Rooney Mara plays a young woman with a tragic past whom (surprise, surprise) Jason Segel falls in love with. It's directed by The One I Love's Charlie McDowell, and also stars Fargo's Jesse Plemons and Mad Max's Riley Keough.

An official release date hasn't been announced yet, but it will start streaming sometime next year and then will come out in a limited theatrical release sometime after that. Some smaller films, including The One I Love, have started coming out on VOD before coming out in theaters, so it's possible that we're seeing the beginning of a new model in which streaming indie movies generates buzz for their theatrical release.
