MGM is Turning the Rising Stars Comicbook Series into a Movie
It only ran for a limited 24 issues, but Michael J. Straczynski's 'Rising Stars' Comicbook series has garnered a cult following in the years since its release back in 1999. The series came to an abrupt halt following a row between Straczynski and publisher, Top Cow, but eventually went on to spawn a number of spin-offs, with the last being published back in 2005. Straczynski has long talked about the potential of Rising Stars for adaptation to the big screen, and now it looks like that might finally happen after Deadline reports that MGM has optioned the property, setting Straczynski to work on the screenplay.

With the plethora of comicbook movies currently flooding the market, you might be rolling your eyes at the prospect of yet another property being pencilled into theater schedules. However, Rising Stars is not your average comicbook series. Rising Stars' story explores how the real world would react to an influx of superpowered people, centering on 113 gifted children who were conceived just before a meteor hits their Illinois hometown, gifting them with the powers that could change their lives before they are even born. The ways in which these children go on to use their powers run the gamut from petty crime to helping the needy to barely using them at all. When a number of 'Specials' are murdered, they learn that the powers of the deceased are passed on to the remaining Specials in the group. The new powers are unwanted by some, but used for dark deeds by others.

With
Straczynski, who created Babylon 5 and has written the likes of Marvel's Thor (my personal favorite MCU movie) and World War Z, heading up the adaptation of his own creation, Rising Stars has a great deal of potential. If mass audiences are starting to feel any form of comicbook movie fatigue in a few years time, Rising Stars could be the property that cleanses their palette.
