The First Reviews for Independence Day: Resurgence Are Exactly What You Expect
After a two-decade wait, Independence Day is re-surging into theaters this weekend. The first reviews are finally in, and they are what we expected to a tee: according to virtually every critic, Resurgence is hopelessly stupid, but a whole lot of fun and boasting unimpeachable special effects.

Opening quote
I'm not going to sit here and slate the film for its linear plot, cartoonish characters, lack of realism and biblical, CGI-laden set pieces, it's what makes it enjoyable. - The Independent

Sketchily conceived in all departments but its sensational, more-is-more visual effects - which is, let's be honest, where its efforts should be concentrated - this belated, cluttered sequel to the 1996 smash "Independence Day" breaks far less ground than its alien invaders, but confirms director Roland Emmerich as modern cinema's most spirited conductor of popcorn chaos. - Variety

By all accounts, whether you will enjoy this movie depends entirely on what you're looking for. If you want to watch a dumb action spectacle with landmarks getting blown up, then this is the movie to see:

Opening quote
Roland Emmerich, director of Independence Day: Resurgence, is unfairly labelled a 'guilty pleasure' director.... [But] Independence Day: Resurgence is packed so full of cheese, explosions and too-convenient plot-twists it could sink a ship; yet it all adds up to a fun, old-fashioned disaster pic, made with such confidence and heart that it's time we finally blast the guilt into the stratosphere where it belongs IGN

But on the other hand, if you're looking for any kind of emotional resonance, or even a sensical plot, then this may not be the movie for you:

Opening quote
Independence Day: Resurgence shows no signs of intelligent life... [It] inflates the scale of the alien threat to such a preposterous degree – the mothership takes up roughly an eighth of the Earth's total surface – that the queues of honking traffic and rooftop helicopter rescues we're supposed to invest in can't help but feel like microscopic trifles. - Telegraph

Opening quote
Joyless and tedious, a reboot quite without the first film's audacity and fun. The plot's potentially interesting dependence on the idea that there are aliens who are allies as well as enemies is lost in a tiresomely written muddle – an all-but-plotless melee of boring digital carnage... It can't be entirely the fault of our digital age that this film has no real sense of excitement and awe. It's a movie that is going through the intergalactic motions. - The Guardian

But at the end of the day, here's the bottom line:

Opening quote
"Resurgence" is exactly what you expect, down to the predictable story beats, the laughably earnest dialogue, the fundamental misunderstanding of science and the plot holes deep enough to reach Earth's gooey delicious center. But that's all beside the point. You should never have expected it to be anything else. - CNET
