UPDATED: Suicide Squad's Surprisingly Short Runtime Revealed
Comic book movies have experienced a boom in the last few years, and for whatever reason, that explosion has also been reflected in their bloated runtimes. You hardly ever see a comic book movie that runs for less than two and a half hours anymore, especially when it comes to team-up movies. But now, Suicide Squad's runtime has been revealed by Flixster, and it's a mere one hour and forty minutes.

UPDATE - 06/24/16 12:47 pm

David Ayer has denied that the runtime is one hour forty minutes, via a very succinct tweet:

Hopefully it's not too much longer than this, since it would be kind of refreshing to have a shorter, more streamlined superhero movie to counter bloated disasters like Batman v Superman. But then again, if Suicide Squad is as good as it seems, then we'll probably want more of it, so no complaints.

Original article below:

110 minutes isn't short by most movies' standards, but by superhero movie standards, it's extremely quick. In the DCEU, fellow team-up movie Batman v Superman ran for two and a half hours for its theatrical release, and the director's cut runs for three full hours. Even Man of Steel, which was a solo movie, was 143 minutes long. (And Marvel's no different, with Avengers movie Captain America solo movie Civil War clocking in at 147 minutes and Avengers: Age of Ultron coming in at 141 minutes.)

This could be worrisome, since there are eleven heroes to be serviced in this movie, and not a lot of time to do it in. But honestly, I think this makes the movie even more promising. Movies like Batman v Superman and Age of Ultron aren't epically long because they're developing the characters, but because they need time for at least two huge, mind-numbing, CGI-heavy action climaxes. From everything we've been hearing about the movie, it's likely that the runtime is so short because the plot is more elegant and streamlined, and its reach doesn't exceed its grasp.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.
