Kathleen Kennedy Teases Mon Mothma's Larger Role in Rogue One
We saw a brief glimpse of the classic Star Wars character Mon Mothma in the teaser trailer for Rogue One, but from that short scene, it was unclear whether the "Mother of the Rebellion" would just have a cameo appearance or would play a significant supporting role. Now, Kathleen Kennedy assures fans that Mon Mothma will be a big presence in the film, and will have a notable impact on the story.

Opening quote
"We actually see quite a bit of her," Kennedy told EW. "The Rebel alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do."
Closing quote

Mon Mothma first appeared for only a couple of minutes in Return of the Jedi, in which she delivered the classic line "Many Bothans died to bring us this information," in regards to the plans for the second Death Star. In Rogue One, she will play a large role in destroying the first Death Star, as she is the one who recruits Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso and pairs her with Diego Luna's Captain Andor in order to steal the plans for the original Imperial weapon.

In Rogue One, Mothma will be played by Genevieve O'Reilly, who was originally cast for a scene as young Mothma in Revenge of the Sith. The sequence was eventually cut from the theatrical release, but the actress was brought back when Gareth Edwards was casting the role for Rogue One. She also happens to look quite a lot like Caroline Blakiston, who played the first incarnation of Mothma in Return of the Jedi.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
