Drive Director Nicolas Winding Refn Wants to Make a Batgirl Movie
Nicolas Winding Refn just made his first female-centric movie, the transgressive arthouse horror movie The Neon Demon, and it looks like he wants to continue that trend. The Drive and Bronson director stated in a recent interview that he would be interested in directing a movie that starred a certain female superhero.

Opening quote
"God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun," he told Business Insider when asked about making a superhero film. "I just don't know when it's going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity."
Closing quote

Winding Refn has previously expressed interest in directing a Wonder Woman movie, but since Gal Godot's solo movie is coming out next year with Patty Jenkins at the helm, that obviously didn't pan out. He technically could still direct one of the sequels, but in any case, he has his sights set on a different DC hero. When asked which character he wanted to adapt, he said, "I want to make Batgirl. Let's get Warner working on it."

I can't decide whether this would be an amazing or terrible idea. On the one hand, Winding Refn is an extremely talented director, and his ultra-violent and gritty aesthetic would certainly fit into the DCEU (I would say he has to tone it down a little for the kids, but you never know in the DC Murderverse). But then again, The Neon Demon wasn't exactly a feminist movie, for all that it clearly had feminist aspirations (see our full review here), so maybe the character would be better left in someone else's hands. (Although Neon Demon star Elle Fanning would make a perfect Barbara Gordon. Just saying.)
