The New Star Trek Cinematic Universe Finally Gets an Official Name
Star Trek Beyond is coming out next month, at which point we'll be three films deep in the alternate timeline begun in 2009's Star Trek. So far fans have been forced to come up with unofficial names, such as Abramsverse, JJverse, JJ Trek, NuTrek, etc. But now, Star Trek has released an official name that will be catalogued in the encyclopedia: the Kelvin Timeline.

The name was first revealed in a Star Trek Online blog post, and was then confirmed by several official sources, including CBS Consumer Products' Holly Amos and Star Trek Encyclopedia co-authors Michael and Denise Okuda.

It makes sense that they would want to replace the unofficial name Abramsverse, considering that Star Trek Beyond will mark the first film to come out without his involvement. Plus, it's just logical to have names for everything in nerddom, for expediency's sake (I'm still waiting for Star Wars fans to get a better moniker. Seriously, what's up with that?).

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22.
