J.K. Simmons Says the DCEU’s Commissioner Gordon Is a Badass
While recent reports have noted the coincidental nature of J.K. Simmons beefing up, that doesn't mean that it can't still be an asset to his new role as Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming DC team-up, Justice League. In fact, Simmons recently went on record about the character in an interview he did that focused on his most recent role in Kung Fu Panda 3. Here's what the actor had to say in regards to the second most iconic detective in all of Gotham:

Opening quote
People of my generation remember Commissioner Gordon as this jolly, ineffectual Santa Claus type, and I think over the years in the comics there's definitely much more of a badass side to him…One of the things that's interesting to me is investigating hopefully a little bit more of that badass [side]…You're living in a universe where it's pretty tough to be a badass compared to somebody like Batman, but in the universe of non-superheroes I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that's a real partner to Batman, not just a guy that turns on the bat signal and goes, 'Help! Help, Batman!'
Closing quote

It's clear that Zack Snyders wants his directorial vision for the DCEU to be much different than previous iterations of the DC Universe, such as those presented in the Nolan trilogy or the Burton and Donner movies. He's accomplished that in a lot of ways, though many of those ways have drawn criticism to his vision.

A more badass Commissioner Gordon is certainly in keeping with the source material, however, and it makes sense that the DCEU would want a more capable Jim Gordon seeing as how the films have drawn so heavily from Frank Miller's graphic novels. Perhaps the DCEU Commissioner Gordon will take after the Detective Gordon from Miller's Batman: Year One? If so, he'll likely be not only a more physically capable version of the character, but also a more complex one.

No matter where the creative decision makers behind the DCEU decide to take their version of Commissioner Gordon, it would be pretty hard to argue that he could have been cast better. Simmons is a phenomenal actor with a great track record, and it looks like he'll fit in with the rest of DC's uber-talented cast.
