Simon Kinberg Says Characters from Star Wars Rebels Could Feed Into Future Movies
The Star Wars animated series have incorporated several characters from the films, including favorites like Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and R2-D2. But original characters from the animated series have never made the jump to the movies before, until Forest Whitaker plays Clone Wars' Saw Gerrera in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But according to producer Simon Kinberg, we might be seeing more characters from the animated series pop up in future movies, as part of the push to make the universe even more interconnected.

In a new interview with Moviefone, Kinberg praised the way Star Wars is cross-pollinating between all of its media, much like Disney's other huge franchise, Marvel:

Opening quote
"I think part of the fun of the way they're building the universe is that it is interconnected between the different movies and even beyond the movies ... It's something that was true in comic books going back, the way that you'd have interconnections between characters and stories. Even sometimes from DC to Marvel. I like the way that those stories are told in the larger tapestry."
Closing quote

And when asked about the characters who will appear in the upcoming season, he teased the appearance of more characters from the original movies, as well as the possibility of characters who connect to future Star Wars films:

Opening quote
What's lovely is, obviously, we've brought in characters from 'Clone Wars' in the second season, and we keep sort of bringing characters from the original movies and sort of deepening the relationships between our core characters, the Ghost crew. So it's trying to balance the two different things, like the original cast from the first season with 'Clone Wars,' with characters from the original movies, and maybe even feeding into future movies.
Closing quote

Kinberg is being deliberately vague here, so this could mean several different things. It could mean that characters we've already seen in the animated series will appear in future movies, probably minor characters like Saw Gerrera, or that characters who will appear in upcoming movies will appear in the shows, much like original characters have. The latter will probably be true anyway, at least as the timeline allows, but personally, I'm hoping that Ahsoka will make the jump from the shows to the movies, especially since she's such an important part of Anakin Skywalker's story.
