Sigourney Weaver Confirms the Timeline of Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5
Much of the attention of Alien fans is currently focused on Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, but just a few months ago, the buzz surrounding the franchise was firmly focused on a different project. Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 project caught all the headlines when it was revealed that the South African director would be bringing back stars of the early Alien movies, Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn. Although the project was confirmed (and later put on ice to give Alien: Covenant some breathing room), ambiguity appears to have been the order of day, with few concrete details being provided on its plot.

Early last year, Blomkamp caused something of a firestorm when he hinted that his Alien 5 movie would ignore the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. "I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens," said Blomkamp. "So it's Alien, Aliens and then this movie."

Those two movies might have many detractors, but they also have a great number of fans. To simply erase any relevance they might have on the future of the franchise would be a bold, and not entirely popular step. After a while, Blomkamp softened his stance, and the general fanbase was placated. Now, though, Sigourney Weaver has revealed that the director's initial plan is still going ahead, much to the anger of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection fans.

Speaking to EW about the upcoming Alien Reunion at San Diego Comic Con this year, Weaver gave the closest thing to a confirmation of Alien 5's place in the alien timeline we've had to date.

Opening quote
"It's just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill's movie," Weaver says."
Closing quote

With its place in the timeline all but confirmed, the question of whether or not this movie will actually go ahead becomes the biggest mystery. If it does go ahead, the path has now been made devoid of obstacles for the likes of Newt and Hicks to return.
