Javier Bardem in Talks to Star in Universal's Frankenstein Reboot
Universal's classic monster universe has been aiming high by casting several A-list actors, and now, they might be able to add an Oscar winner to the list. A new report claims that none other than Javier Bardem will star in the Frankenstein reboot, which will be part of a cinematic universe that includes The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and more.

According to Variety, Bardem is in talks to play the title character in the new Frankenstein movie series, although it's unclear which movie he will star in first (the studio is developing a Bride of Frankenstein movie as well, which was rumored to come out first). It was also unclear in the initial report whether he would be playing the scientist Frankenstein or Frankenstein's monster, but apparently it's the latter:

If he takes the role, Bardem will join other big names such as Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, who star in the reboot of The Mummy, as well as Johnny Depp, who has signed on to play Invisible Man, Dwayne Johnson, who may star as Wolf Man, and Scarlett Johansson, who is circling the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Angelina Jolie has been rumored to play Bride of Frankenstein, in which she would co-star alongside Bardem.

Bardem is best known for his iconic role as the sociopathic Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, for which he won the Oscar, as well as his roles in Biutiful, Before Night Falls, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and, of course, Skyfall. Aside from playing a Bond villain, this would be his first proper foray into nerd culture, and it sounds like an amazing casting choice (although hopefully it won't preclude him from consideration for a superhero role in the future).

The Mummy reboot, which just finished filming, comes out on June 9, 2017. The Bride of Frankenstein movie doesn't yet have a release date, but it will be written by Spider-Man and War of the Worlds' David Koepp.
