'Ghostbusters' Will Go on Forever, Says Producer
Reviews are pouring in for the new Ghostbusters movie, and they're surprisingly solid after the film's admittedly awful trailers. After 68 reviews, the movie's sitting at a pretty rosy 76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is good news for Sony, who is hoping to turn the franchise into their own Star Wars.

At the premiere of the new film, producer Amy Pascal told The Hollywood Reporter her thoughts on the franchise's potential, saying, "It's going to be endless. People are going to love this movie so much that they're going to demand more and more." That's some pretty positive thinking from Pascal, and calls to mind Disney's plan to release a new Star Wars movie every year until the end of time. But is it realistic?

Star Wars and Ghostbusters aren't really an apples to apples comparison, but Ghostbusters isn't exactly a slouch when it comes to merchandising and franchise potential, either. The old animated series and toyline are remembered fondly, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a '90s kid who didn't love Ectocooler. But it seems like Sony may be putting too many eggs into the Ghostbusters basket. The movie is currently only tracking to open in the $40-$50 million range in its opening weekend, which would put it at about half the total that The Secret Life of Pets earned last weekend, and around 20 percent of what The Force Awakens pulled in when it exploded into theaters last year.

I'm a big Ghostbusters fan, so I hope that the new movie does well and that the franchise continues to grow. I just hope that Sony isn't getting ahead of itself too much.
