First Reactions to Star Trek Beyond Compare It to The Original Series
Star Trek Beyond has been met with some trepidation from Trekkies, especially after that lackluster first trailer and a generally so-so marketing campaign. But now, the first reactions from an early junket screening are here, and they're shockingly positive:

To be fair, these early reactions are almost always positive, since they are generally attended by press and others with relationships to the studios. But the specific feedback is extremely encouraging, since many are comparing the newest installment to the classic Original Series:

Many of the complaints about J.J. Abrams' new films, as well as the first trailers for Beyond, were that they abandoned the optimism, adventure, and sense of fun that defines Star Trek and sets it apart from other franchises. We should take these first reactions with a grain of salt, but especially considering that Justin Lin and Simon Pegg have been vocal about getting back to the optimism of the TV shows, these reactions are extremely encouraging.

When it comes to the new characters, attendees had a mixed response; Sofia Boutella's Jaylah was cited as a breakout character, while Idris Elba's Krall was met with more equivocation:

And, finally, the film apparently has a brief, but moving tribute to the major Trekkies we lost in the last year: Spock actor Leonard Nimoy and Chekov actor Anton Yelchin:
