Rogue One Was Originally an Idea for George Lucas' Live-Action Star Wars Series
Rogue One's plotline comes from the opening crawl of A New Hope, as well as that famous Return of the Jedi line, "Many Bothans died to bring us this information." But as it turns out, there was another Star Wars property that played a role in Rogue One's early history: George Lucas' live-action Star Wars series that, unfortunately, never made it to our screens.

Today, at Star Wars Celebration (via Collider), Industrial Light & Magic Chief Creative Officer John Knoll discussed how he came up with the idea for the movie, and the story goes all the way back to thirteen years ago, while they were filming Revenge of the Sith.

Opening quote
"I'd heard that George [Lucas] and [producer] Rick [McCallum] were developing this live-action TV series and I got to thinking about what sort of fun stories we might be able to tell in that episodic format. I started playing around with this idea drawn from the opening crawl of [A New Hope], this sort of Mission: Impossible-style spy mission to steal the Death Star plans."

But after speaking with George Lucas about his vision for the doomed Star Wars series, he realized that the idea wouldn't work with the format. Unfortunately, the TV show never made it to our screens, and Knoll didn't think about the idea again until the new slate of films was announced, and Lucasfilm started developing standalone anthology films.

Opening quote
"I was thinking, 'You know that original idea could make a pretty good standalone film,' and I was chatting just informally with friends at work and I'd give 'em the informal pitch, and I got such enthusiastic responses when I would describe this that I couldn't help but continue to make it a little more elaborate and think through some of the character arcs of who these people are and how this might end. Finally I made this sort of informal pitch to a friend of mine who said, 'You need to make an appointment right now with Kathy [Kennedy] and Kiri [Hart] and you need to pitch this,' and I realized well actually he's right because if I don't I'll always wonder what would've happened if I hadn't."
