Rogue One and Other Star Wars Anthology Movies Probably Won't Have an Opening Crawl
Rogue One's traditional opening crawl is looking less likely by the minute. The minds behind the first Star Wars anthology film are still hemming and hawing a little, but from their most recent statements, Rogue One will probably forego that classic Star Wars tradition.

Last month, Kathleen Kennedy said that the opening crawl was still under discussion, but that they were trying to figure out how to "differentiate" the anthology films from the saga films. So it certainly sounded like they were considering leaving out the opening crawl, and in the latest interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kennedy indicated that the (still ongoing) discussions were going in that direction.

Opening quote
"You know, we're in the midst of talking about it, but I don't think these films will have an opening crawl," Kennedy said of the possibility that Rogue One would include the familiar Star Wars trope. "I think that's what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today."

Director Gareth Edwards, on the other hand, left the question more up in the air:

Opening quote
"I think basically there's a lot of things that I probably can't talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that," Edwards said. "The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films...the whole crawl of it all -- it's funny people are fascinated on that.

"This film is born out of a crawl. The thing that inspired this movie was a crawl and what was written in that. There's this feeling that if we did a crawl, then it'll create another movie. And so the honest answer is you'll have to wait and see."
Closing quote

For the most part, he just seems more afraid of the Disney secrecy assassins, but the comment about an opening crawl for Rogue One spawning another movie is interesting. He says that the anthology films are supposed to be different from saga films, which would indicate that they're not including one, but obviously they would want another movie, since they plan to continue the franchise forever and ever.

We'll have to wait and see, but my guess is that they won't include one. The opening crawl is very much a saga film trademark, and leaving it out, or better yet, having a different kind of introduction specific to the anthology films, would help tell audiences that Rogue One will be a very different kind of Star Wars movie.
