Star Trek 4 Confirmed, Will Co-Star Chris Hemsworth
Star Trek Beyond comes out this week, and considering the star power, fan base, and extremely positive reviews, it's already set to make a killing at the box office. So, naturally, Star Trek 4 has been confirmed to be in development, but the real surprise is the casting announcement: none other than Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Captain Kirk's father.

Here's the official logline for Star Trek 4:

Opening quote
In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine's Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.
Closing quote

In the 2009 Star Trek reboot, Chris Hemsworth played George Kirk, Captain Kirk's father who sacrificed his life to save his wife and unborn child. Hemsworth's star was just starting to rise at that point, so the franchise is finding a way to bring him back. The sci-fi explanation will be pretty convenient considering how famous Hemsworth has gotten since then, but we're not complaining. And besides, it makes sense for Chris Pine's Kirk, who has had daddy issues since day one, to finally confront his father head-on.

Paramount also announced that J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay would write the script, and J.J. Abrams and Lindsay Weber would produce via Bad Robot Productions. No director has been announced, but considering that critics are praising Justin Lin for course-correcting the entire franchise, it's a distinct possibility that he'll return for another installment.

Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters Friday, July 22.
