In December, the Star Wars franchise will begin the biggest diversification of its movie offerings since the Star Wars Christmas special back in 1978 with the first ever Star Wars standalone movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars story. Rogue One is expected to be the first in a long line of new spin-off/stand-alone movies produced by Disney over the coming years, and everyone has their own ideas about what would make a great Star Wars story.

As director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams is probably better placed than most to decide what stories Disney should select for their next 'Star Wars stories'. In a new interview, Abrams reveals there's one area of Star Wars lore that interests him in a big way.

Opening quote
"I gotta say Kathy Kennedy, who's running it all, she seems to be pushing all the right buttons," Abrams told Collider. "There isn't something that I'd love to see-I guess the one thing I would say is there's a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell."
Closing quote

It's likely that the Knights of Ren will be explored in more detail over the course of the next two Star Wars episodes, but Abrams' reference to a specific to a specific Knights of Ren story would suggest that there's still going to be some ground that needs covering once this sequel trilogy is done.

The Knights of Ren are a shadowy organization led by Kylo Ren. But, while the man who was once Ben Solo is their Master now, they group was initially created by Supreme Leader Snoke in the years after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Snoke tasked Kylo Ren to use his Knights to destroy Luke Skywalker's new Jedi Order, but what tasks lay ahed for the Dark Side collective now that their work is almost complete, remains to be seen.

Personally, I would still rather have a deeper dive into some of the classic areas of Star Wars lore – Mandalorian Civil War anybody? – but depending on how much we see of the Knights of Ren in the next two trilogy movies, this could be an area of boundless potential.
