Now that Pacific Rim 2 is officially underway with a new release date, fans are wondering whether the original cast will return for the long-awaited sequel. We already figured that Idris Elba wouldn't be back, since star John Boyega is reportedly playing his son, but now Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam has confirmed that he won't be returning, either.

At San Diego Comic Con this weekend, Hunnam told Yahoo! Movies that an early draft featured his character, Raleigh Becket, but he was written out since he was unavailable for their production schedule. But he did say, "I'm very excited about it. I'm glad they're making it." (As are we all, Charlie Hunnam, as are we all.)

But that doesn't mean that the original cast is being completely axed for the sequel. Guillermo del Toro, who is no longer directing Pacific Rim 2 but is still producing, was asked by THR what was happening with the original cast, and whether he was "not bringing back Charlie Hunnam or Rinko Kikuchi," to which he responded:

Opening quote
"That's not entirely true. As a producer I learned not to declare anything about a movie I'm not directing. I can tell you this - a lot of the cast from the first movie is coming back. I leave those communications to Steven DeKnight. He's not only a director, but he's actually a guy I respect and admire and it's his movie."
Closing quote

So to be fair, it sounds like it's not 100% his decision, but it looks like there's a good chance that Kikuchi and other original cast members, like Charlie Day and Ron Perlman, will return. And with Hunnam out of the picture, Boyega is all but confirmed as the lead, which can only be a good thing for the film.

Pacific Rim 2 is slated to come out on February 23, 2018.
