James Gunn Almost Didn’t Include Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Well, we almost missed out big-time, guys. After debuting the first footage of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at SDCC to rapturous reception, James Gunn admits that he almost left out the element that already looks like the best part of the movie: Baby Groot.

Opening quote
"It was a big thing for me," James told Collider of the decision to include Baby Groot. "I was writing the treatment for the script, I already knew who Quill's father was at that time, and to be completely honest-and I've never said this to anybody-I was going to make Groot a grown Groot. And it just didn't seem right.

And I thought, well, wait a second. Baby Groot offers a whole new way of looking at the movie and a new way to go into it. It's about a family, and how they are all around this younger character is going to make a big difference, and suddenly everything opened up for me."
Closing quote

The biggest reveal from the SDCC footage, which hasn't made it onto the Internet yet, was undoubtedly Star Lord's father. But trust us, once you actually watch the footage, Baby Groot steals the show. He's so adorable it hurts, and if the movie sees the Guardians become his collective surrogate parents, that will be even more adorable. We can already tell that Baby Groot makes the movie, so we're incredibly relieved that James Gunn had the forethought to keep Groot at toddler status for a while. In fact, we kind of hope he never grows up.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
