The Walking Dead Comics Almost Ended Very Differently
Ever since The Walking Dead comics began, creator Robert Kirkman has said he has an ending in mind for Rick and the gang (possibly involving Rick's death). But now, Kirkman claims that he has changed his planned ending for one simple reason: it's already happened.

At a Skybound panel at San Diego Comic Con this weekend (via CBR), Kirkman discussed the hit comics series, as well as his planned ending. Weirdly enough, it was supposed to be a happy one, or at least as happy as The Walking Dead gets:

Opening quote
"The end has changed," Kirkman said. "There was one version that would have had it ending as soon as everybody reached Alexandria."
Closing quote

The group reached Alexandria years ago in the comics, which means that if it had ended this way, the entire series would have had a very different character. The era in Alexandria is the longest-running location in the comics, and the post-Alexandria era includes All-Out War and more importantly Negan, who has arguably become the most iconic villain in the series (with the possible exception of The Governor).

But when is the ending going to be? The series shows no signs of slowing down, and continues to change the status quo and raise the stakes with additions like the Whisperers. But also at SDCC (via Screencrush), Andrew Lincoln intimated that it might end at the same time as the AMC series:

Opening quote
"I don't know, man. I mean, the comic book's still going," the actor said when asked when the series would end. "And Scott Gimple said that maybe there was an opportunity to finish the comic book and finish the TV series at the same time, which would be kind of cool."
Closing quote

We can take this with a grain of salt, since it's all secondhand, and the comics series doesn't really show any sign of slowing down, either. Plus, the show is several years behind the comics, so it's not like the endings would be similar because they're somewhat on the same page, like Game of Thrones. But still, this might be our first insight into the ending of The Walking Dead, even if it might be our grandchildren reading it.
