Scott Derrickson Says Test Audiences Love Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange stole the show at SDCC with a crazy projected light show (complete with smoke machines), an Ancient One-focused clip, and a new trailer. But the crowd went the craziest when Tumblr favorite Benedict Cumberbatch took the stage, and according to director Scott Derrickson, that's the main draw for the movie as well.

At San Diego Comic Con, Derrickson told Collider that Doctor Strange has already had several test screenings, and they could all agree on one thing: Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing in the role.

Opening quote
"The thing I learned, we've had a few test screenings, and overwhelmingly I've learned that people LOVE Benedict Cumberbatch in this movie. They just love him!... They love the visuals, they love the action, but more than that, they love Benedict. And he is Doctor Strange.

"As [large-scale] a movie as it is and as weird as the visuals get, it is still a story about one guy. It's about one guy overcoming himself and his own ego. In that sense it's a very specific journey that you're tracking from beginning to end, watching this guy get past himself. And that's what Benedict does and the audiences love him."
Closing quote

This isn't a huge surprise, since Cumberbatch is a charming and talented actor, but it does come as a relief. While Doctor Strange looks like a good movie so far, you never know, and if Cumberbatch is great in the role it will at least ensure that we could get a great Doctor Strange movie in the future.

But luckily, we probably won't have to wait, since production for Doctor Strange seems to be going smoothly. Derrickson also revealed that the running time has barely changed since the first cut (they're almost done with visual effects), and that it only went from a little over two hours to a little under two hours. Hopefully that means that the current cut of the movie is testing well, and there's not too much re-working that needs to be done to make it as great as other Marvel movies.

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4.
