Jeremy Renner Wanted to Kill Off Hawkeye in the First Avengers Movie
Hawkeye has become a much more welcome presence in the Avengers roster over the course of the last few years, but in the first Avengers movie, he was given short shrift, spending most of the film brainwashed by Loki. Jeremy Renner was apparently none-too-pleased with this character arc (or lack thereof), to the point that he was desperately looking for a way out of the franchise.

While speaking at London Comic Con (via Radio Times), Renner recalled that he spent most of the first Avengers film as a "zombie":

Opening quote
"I never really told anybody this, but in the first Avengers… I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I'm like Loki's minion. And I'm still not even sure who Hawkeye was at that point. So I'm a little frustrated, because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was."

So naturally, he gave very subtle suggestions that his character should be killed off—by miming a heart attack in between takes while filming several scenes with Scarlett Johansson.

Opening quote
"And they said, 'what are you doing man?' 'I'm giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy's gonna be having a heart attack.'"

This position was understandable during the first movie, since Hawkeye was pretty much a non-presence. But his self-deprecating sense of humor was arguably the highlight of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and made a welcome comeback in Civil War. So Renner doesn't necessarily want the character to die now, and neither do we. We would rather see Black Widow or Scarlet Witch get their own movies, but Hawkeye is a fun member of the Avengers team.

Opening quote
"I don't really want him to die now. I really got to explore him a lot, and I can't wait to explore him more, and there's some really cool ideas coming up. Really cool ideas. Great deaths! Amazing ways to die."
