'Suicide Squad' Tracking For a Record-Breaking Opening
When the early tracking numbers came out for Suicide Squad last month, they were impressive. At the time, the movie was expected to open at $125 million for the weekend - which would easily be a record for the month of August. Now, with the premiere just days away, the newest data indicates that the movie's gross could climb even higher.

Current tracking puts Suicide Squad at a whopping $140 million for its opening weekend, which would obliterate current August record-holder Guardians of the Galaxy's $94 million debut from 2014. If it reaches that total, Suicide Squad would also surpass Deadpool's $132 million opening weekend to become the third highest opener among this year's superhero films, after Civil War's $179 million and Batman v Superman's $166 million. Some, such as Box Office Mojo are even suggesting an opening of $145 million isn't out of reach.

$140 million would also put the film at number 17 on the all-time highest opening weekends list, sandwiched between The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts One and Two. It would also make it the eighth best opening for a superhero movie, and the fifth highest weekend for Warner Bros. Speaking of the studio, they're likely mighty pleased at this news, and are likely hoping the film gets strong reviews to give it the legs that Batman v Superman lacked. Who knows, with good word of mouth and a strong international showing, we might be looking at a billion dollar movie here.
