No Infinity Stones in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'
Guardians of the Galaxy has carved out a reputation for itself as being separate from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it sounds like that distinction will be even more pronounced in the sequel.

When the first Guardians film did crossover into larger MCU territory, it was in scenes of exposition that explained what the Infinity Stones were and why Thanos was after them. The main plot line of the upcoming Avengers Infinity War was explained better in Guardians than in many other MCU film, and some fans were hoping for more of the same in Volume 2. But it turns out that the Infinity Stones won't feature in the new movie at all.

Responding to a question on his Facebook page about Infinity Stones being in the film, writer/director James Gunn said, "There will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2." When pressed, he elaborated, "There will be infinity nothing. It's a story about the Guardian's, and isn't meant to lead to anything else."

The idea of "no Infinity nothing" and that the film "isn't meant to lead to anything" suggests a couple of things. First, it means that Thanos (who most believe was included in the first film at Disney's request) probably is absent from the film, and it implies that Gunn has been given total control over this franchise without studio meddling. Disney has gained a reputation for making sure their Marvel movies adequately cross-reference each other, but it sounds like they may be recognizing Guardians as something special that can stand on its own. Let's hope it stays that way.
