Star Wars Battlefront's New Death Star Game Mode Will Finally Give Us Space Battles
We might not be big fans of this whole paid DLC deal, but it does at least look like Star Wars Battlefront's next expansion is going to give us something we've been asking for for a long, long time: SPACE BATTLES!. We all knew that the Death Star DLC would give us some form of space battle (it is a space station, after all), but the new game mode in which these battles will take place actually sounds like a lot of fun.

At Gamescom in Germany today, EA revealed new details on what would be added to Battlefront in the upcoming Death Star expansion. Previously, at Star Wars Celebration in London, EA teased that a new multi-stage game mode would be added, and today we learnt exactly what that means for players. Named Battle Station, the new game mode will be broken into three distinct stages, all of which will see battle rage either outside or within the most beautifully flawed super-weapon in all of science fiction.

Phase 1 will see Rebel players hopping into X-Wings and A-Wings as they attempt to weaken the Death Star's defenses by wiping out enough TIE Fighters and TIE Interceptors (piloted by Imperial players) to allow a Y-Wing bombing squadron to get their shots off at the battle station's surface. If you've played Battlefront, you'll know that the Rebel ships tend to fare a little better in battle than their Imperial counterparts, and for that reason the Imperial ranks will be bolstered by a number of AI pilots.

Should the Rebels succeed, the action is taken into the interior of the Death Star for Phase 2. Here, Rebel ranks must capture and extract a droid while fending off the advances of the station's many Imperial soldiers. During this phase, users will be able to take control of new heroes, Chewbacca and Bossk, to try and gain a much needed edge over their opponents.

Phase 3, is where the real fun starts. Once the droid has been extracted, the assault on the Death Star's weak spot finally begins. We all know the drill here. Rebels must get a pilot through one of the Death Star's heavily defended trenches and fire a pair proton torpedoes right into its exhaust port. Best of all, players can take control of Luke Skywalker's Red 5 X-Wing and take the glory for themselves....if they survive an assault by TIE Fighters, that is.

The Death Star Expansion comes to Star Wars Battlefront in September.
