This Is Riri Williams' New Superhero Name in Invincible Iron Man
When it was recently announced that 15-year-old engineering prodigy Riri Williams would take over for Tony Stark in the Invincible Iron Man series, we were ecstatic. But after we were done celebrating, we wondered what her new superhero name would be (or if she would just go by Iron Man). Now, Marvel has revealed their name choice, and it speaks to the entire mythology of Iron Man as well as making the name gender-neutral.

Ironheart!

According to the exclusive from Wired, Riri Williams will go by the name "Ironheart" rather than Iron Man. Writer Brian Michael Bendis says that all of the expected names were considered, including Iron Woman and Iron Maiden, but that Ironheart ultimately fit the character best.

Opening quote
"Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some," Bendis said. "Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you'll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe's suggestion was."
Closing quote

Although Ironheart isn't the catchiest name we've ever heard, it does make sense to tie the name to Iron Man's origin story, so it's clear that this isn't an entirely new character, but that Iron Man is a concept that doesn't have a gender or race. Bendis is right that Iron Woman (or, God forbid "Iron Girl") would have been retrograde, and while Iron Maiden would have been pretty bad-ass, it's probably better for the name to be entirely gender-neutral.

But for those of you who miss Tony Stark, he's not going anywhere. He's very much still in the Marvel universe somewhere while this series is taking place, and even better, the AI in Riri's Iron suit is based on Tony's personality.

Opening quote
"Regardless of where he might be physically," said editor Tom Breevort, "he'll be soaring along with her spiritually."

Invincible Iron Man will be illustrated by artist Stefano Caselli, and will come out sometime this fall. The cover for the first issue is above, while below is the fifth and final STEAM variant cover, this time for engineering:
