Stranger Things Concept Art Reveals Barb's Original Fate

Spoilers for Stranger Things season one follow!

For those of you who have finished the first season of Netflix's Stranger Things, the outcome wasn't great for breakout character Barb. This is a sci-fi show and everything, so sometimes death isn't everything it seems, but according to the Duffer brothers, her fate is pretty much sealed. And according to newly released concept art for the first season, her fate could have been even sadder (if that's possible), and much, much gorier:

Stranger Things artist Aaron Sims released the concept art on his Instagram, and explained to Screencrush why these images never made it to our screens (or our nightmares):

Opening quote
"In the final design, they ended up veering away from that because it became too unrecognizable," said Sims. "It was difficult to tell exactly what had happened to her; it wasn't an issue of it being too graphic, but rather, that the viewer needed to see something that was very recognizably dead."
Closing quote

And if that looks like a spider crawling out of her mouth in the first image, it's not your imagination. It doesn't really make any sense for spiders to be in the Upside Down, which is probably why this never happened, but it's suitably horrifying.

Opening quote
"In the script for that episode, there was specifically a description of a spider coming out of her mouth, which we incorporated into the design of that second shot … we don't really have an explanation for its existence; the design is based around the script's description."
Closing quote

RIP Barb. At least the Duffer brothers have promised that there will be justice for the fan favorite character in season two, whenever that may be.
