Here's What Stan Lee Thinks of Zendaya as Mary Jane
As expected, a number of angry internet commenters went nuts when it was announced recently that Zendaya was going to be playing Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Zendaya is half-black and half-white, and therefore doesn't look much like the pale-skinned, red-headed Mary Jane of the comics, movies, TV shows... basically every other interpretation of the character that's ever been produced. So some fans were upset, just like they were upset about Michael B. Jordan playing Johnny Storm and Idris Elba portraying Heimdall, but what about someone who's opinion actually matters? What does Spider-Man and Mary Jane creator Stan Lee think?

Stan The Man is all for Zendaya in the role... provided that she has the acting skills to pull it off. Here's what he told the Toronto Sun in a recent interview:
Opening quote
"If she is as good an actress as I hear she is, I think it'll be absolutely wonderful ... The color of their skin doesn't matter, their religion doesn't matter. All that matters is that this the right person for the role."

Way to go, Stan. Leave it to a 93-year-old to impart some wisdom on the children of the digital age. While there are certainly questions about the 19-year-old actress's chops (her most prominent roles to date have been on the Disney Channel), judging her based on her appearance is absurd. Zendaya may end up being the best Mary Jane there ever was, but fans won't know it unless they give her a chance.
