Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: James Gunn Reveals Name and Description for Concept Art Alien
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 still hasn't released that footage from San Diego Comic Con, but fans do have their first glimpse at a scene from the film in the form of new concept art, featuring a weird, mutant space octopus. Now, James Gunn has revealed details on that scene, and has even given the alien a name.

In a Facebook Live fan Q&A, James Gunn was asked about the space monster in the concept art, and revealed that it is "an Abilisk, a multi-dimensional being, and the Guardians have been hired to fight him." That name seems to be entirely original, since no monster named Abilisk exists in the Marvel universe. (Although I guess it sounds a little like "basilisk," a mythological reptile that featured prominently in the Harry Potter series.)

But even more revealing is the fact that the Guardians were "hired" to fight the alien. The scene presumably takes place at the beginning of the film, since team additions Mantis, Nebula, and Yondu are nowhere to be found, so it seems that when we pick up with the Guardians, they're a bona fide team who are hired to fight baddies. That's a long way from the loosely bound group of criminals we saw in the first movie, although it still has a bit of an antihero vibe to it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
