Hilarious Batman: The Killing Joke Honest Trailer Slams Sexist Treatment of Batgirl
Batman: The Killing Joke inspired a little bit of controversy—to say the least. Now, Honest Trailers has given it a veritable beating, blasting its "boring" prologue that "brings DC live-action storytelling to the DC animated universe" (ouch), its subpar animation, and worst of all, its retrogressive treatment of Batgirl, which can be summed up as "problem solved—by creating many, many, many more problems":

In the original graphic novel, Batgirl was shot in the back and sexually humiliated by the Joker, leading many to label it a misogynistic narrative. So when it was announced that the prologue would heavily focus on Barbara, everyone assumed that it would, you know, develop her character and make her narrative more feminist. But instead, they "fought fire with gasoline" by adding a mildly gross and ridiculously sexist romantic subplot between Batman and Batgirl, in which Batman actually says the words, "We're not equals." The fact that the writer not only doubled down on this decision, but called an offended fan a "p*ssy," is just icing on the cake.
