It's confirmed! After an excruciating wait, Netflix has officially renewed Stranger Things for a second season. This would be the least surprising news in the world, except Netflix has also gifted us with a suitably enigmatic teaser:

The teaser doesn't show us any footage, of course, but it does give us nine titles: "Madmax," "The Boy Who Came Back to Life," "The Pumpkin Patch," "The Palace," "The Storm," "The Pollywog," "The Secret Cabin," "The Brain," and "The Lost Brother." These sound like possible episode titles to us, although it's likely that the second season will have eight episodes, just like the first. Either way, we're going to be speculating on what these titles mean until the first footage comes out.

Although this is the first official confirmation, the second season has been a foregone conclusion from the beginning, so we already know some details. It's billed as "Stranger Things 2" because the Duffer Brothers have characterized the second season as a "sequel," not another installment of an anthology, since we'll follow the same characters, but it will have an entirely new arc with a different inciting event, kind of like a movie sequel.

The Duffer brothers also announced to EW that there will be four new characters, but most of the main players are coming back, including Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Joyce (Winona Ryder), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo). (Not Barb though, sorry. She'll be jumping ship to The CW's Riverdale.)

Opening quote
"We don't know about Eleven," said Ross Duffer. "We leave that up in the air."

The second season will also explore the Upside Down in much more detail, and will address the question of whether the Demogorgon is alive (and probably whether it's actually Eleven).

Opening quote
"We kinda just peeled back the curtain and revealed a tiny bit of the Upside Down," said Matt. "So we definitely want to explore a little bit more. There's a lot we don't know about the Upside Down at the end of season 1."
