Watch: Why H.R. Giger's Alien Is Both Beautiful and Terrifying
The Xenomorph is undoubtedly one of the best movie monsters of all time, and one of the few whose fearsomeness doesn't diminish over time. Almost four decades later, Alien still scares the bejeezus out of horror fans, in large part due to H.R. Giger's timeless design. In this video, kaptainchristian explores exactly why the monster of Alien is a masterpiece of creepy-crawliness:

It's no secret that the Xenomorph is terrifying. H.R. Giger specializes in disturbing, uncanny biomechanical imagery, often inspired by his own nightmares (and, in turn, inspiring all of ours). With its elongated head, rapey reproduction process, acidic blood, and an exoskeleton made of real bones (complete with a real human skull), the Xenomorph plays on all of our most primal fears.

But this video also explores why the alien is beautiful, or "elegantly grotesque." While it's horrifying, it's also seductive in its way, especially since you spend the whole movie wanting to see it. And once you do, it doesn't disappoint.

Opening quote
"I always wanted my alien to be a very beautiful thing, something aesthetic," Giger said in an interview quoted in the video. "A monster isn't just something disgusting-it can have a kind of beauty."
