Before the Debate Tonight, Watch Black Mirror Predict What Trump Is Going to Say
This year's election, and particularly Donald Trump's candidacy, has been compared to several works of speculative fiction, notably Idiocracy and Jerzy Kozinski's Being There. But as it turns out, Trump's candidacy—and maybe even his behavior at the debate tonight—was predicted by one more dystopia: the world of Black Mirror's "The Waldo Moment":

We can make jokes about the parallels between Trump and a blue cartoon bear until the cows come home (and we will), but like all Black Mirror episodes, "The Waldo Moment" is actually making a salient point about protest candidates. This quote from "Waldo" is particularly relevant to this election:

Opening quote
"You're a joke. You look less human than I do, and I'm a made-up bear with a turquoise cock... No one takes you seriously. That's why no one votes... Something's got to change. No one trusts you lot, because they know you don't give a shit about anything outside your bubble."
Closing quote

YouTube user Phage went so far as to Photoshop the scene and edit it to include actual quotes from Donald Trump:

Funnily enough, AV Club awarded this episode of Black Mirror a C+ on the grounds that "there's just not enough there to suggest that Waldo's moment would last much longer than 15 minutes... His political message is a kind of 'fuck 'em all' apathy. As Gwendolyn shouts at Jamie late in the episode, if he were calling for revolution, that'd be something. But he's just calling all the politicians venal liars. Anyone can do that; it happens all the time." A year ago, I would have agreed with them, but unfortunately, Trump has now proven that even a cartoon blue dog can run for President.
